The First Annual Miller Spotlight Harvest Festival

On Friday October 30, our Education/ Youth and Child Programming Action Group hosted their first Annual Miller Spotlight Harvest Festival on Lake St. in Gary, Indiana.

Our amazing team of 19 volunteers made it possible for us to pull the inaugural event together in record time.
Over two hundred people came from all over Gary, Hammond and East Chicago to attend this fun, free, family-friendly event.

A HUGE thank you goes out to our Farmer’s Market for donating tables/garbage cans, the MBACD for donating chairs, Ray AKA “The Sound Guy” and the Family Folklore Foundation for setting up and donating our stage and sound equipment for the event.

Our awesome performers from E.O.S were also gracious enough to donate their time.

Twenty-two venders showcased our local education institutes and youth/ child programming available to families in our area. Families were able to chat one-on-one in a relaxed, festive setting while discovering all the different programs Gary has to offer our children and youth.

There was a line out the door for our haunted house and bouncy house. Kids made s’mores with their City Councilwoman Elect and we even had a Flash Mob to “Thriller.”

Our local businesses joined the fun by donating and distributing candy to our trick-or-treaters.

The Miller Spotlight Harvest Festival was a great example of collective impact in action. All parties brought their time, treasures and talents to make the event possible!!!

We hope to have many more engagement activities in the future and loved seeing so many families on Lake Street.

What’s Next???

Our Action Groups will present our Community Plan on Saturday, 11/14/15 from 2-4PM in the Wirt-Emerson Auditorium. Come and see what your neighbors have been working on all year! We will present the goals that our Miller Spotlight volunteers have created from reviewing the 4,013 comments in the Community Conversations Report, our neighborhood statistics/facts, and the feedback we have gotten at different engagement events. Come to this family-friendly event that will showcase our community and our students! Hope to see you there!!!
